Photo archivist and Athens historian Gary Doster draws from his sizable collection of Athens images at the library to show houses, other structures, and scenes around town that no longer exist. Each is followed by a photo of what the location looks like now, showing the vast changes that have taken place. It is a trip by postcard through the distant and more recent past, accompanied by reminiscences and commentary.
Gary L. Doster, a native of Athens, Georgia, is the author of From Abbeville to Zebulon, Early Post Card Views of Georgia, published by the University of Georgia Press, and A Post Card History of Athens, Georgia published by the Athens Historical Society. He is also the author of six other Georgia history books, Dear Sallie… The Letters of Confederate Private James Jewel, and he is a contributor to the mammoth anthology The Tangible Past in Athens, Georgia. He is a certified wildlife biologist and worked for the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia. Gary has had a lifelong interest in Georgia history and has ancestors from Oglethorpe County, Georgia, dating back to the 1790s. He has been married to the former Faye Ann Thomas of Oconee County for 58 years.
