Multipurpose Room C

Deacon King Kong book cover

Join us for our first meeting of 2023 as we discuss Deacon King Kong by James McBride, author of the National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird. Deacon King Kong explores the aftermath of a 1969 Brooklyn church deacon's public shooting of a local drug dealer, as the community's African-American and Latinx witnesses find unexpected support from each other when they are targeted by violent mobsters. Deacon King Kong is an Oprah's Book Club Pick, and named one of the Top Ten Books of the Year by the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and TIME Magazine.

The African-American Authors book club reads works that focus on writers of African descent, the history of African-American people or people of the African diaspora. New members are always welcome.
