Current Heritage Room Projects

Digitizing Flagpole Magazine, 1987-2012

Heritage Room staff, interns and volunteers are working in collaboration with the Digital Library of Georgia, the Georgia Newspaper Project, and Flagpole Magazine to make every issue of the Flagpole freely available online via the Athens Historic Newspaper Archive. Heritage Room personnel are capturing images from microfilm and entering metadata. If you are computer-savvy and interested in volunteering for this project, please complete a Volunteer Application at the link above.

Digitizing Athens-Clarke County High School Yearbooks

The Heritage Room is having its collection of nearly 100 Athens-area middle, junior high, and high school yearbooks scanned, with the ultimate goal of digitally preserving and making them freely accessible online. If you are interested in donating yearbooks which do not appear on our holdings list to the Heritage Room, or if you would like to loan your copies for the purposes of scanning, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. Public Library Partnership Project

As part of the Digital Public Library of America's Public Library Parnership Project, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Knight Foundation, and in partnership with the Digital Library of Georgia, the Heritage Room will be digitizing select materials from its archival holdings to be made freely available on dp.la and the DLG.

Collections Processing and Importing Records to ArchivesSpace

The Heritage Room currently has roughly 500 linear feet of unprocessed archival materials. Thanks to a generous grant from the Watson Brown Foundation Junior Board, the Heritage Room has begun implementing ArchivesSpace, a new archival collection management system. If you have experience arranging and describing archival material and are interested in volunteering for this project, please submit an application.

WWII Oral History Project

In 1992, the Heritage Room undertook an oral history project interviewing Athenians who fought during WWII. Originally recorded on VHS tape, these 55 interviews have been migrated to DVD and digital preservation files, and are awaiting cataloging and conversion to MP4 for uploading to YouTube. If you are computer-savvy and interested in volunteering for this project, please complete a Volunteer Application at the link listed above.

Future Projects

The Heritage Room is always looking for more and different ways to make its wonderful collections easily accessible to the public, but we need your help! Volunteering or interning in the Heritage Room will help enhance your resume and is an excellent way to gain valuable experience:

  • handling and assessing historical documents
  • capturing images, scanning and digitizing
