History of the Heritage Room
The Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room opened in 1992 after the Library's move to its current Baxter Street location. Thanks to strong community support, the collection has grown quickly. With the recent SPLOST-funded renovation of the Library from 2010-2012, the Heritage Room has been fortunate to expand considerably in size.
The Heritage Room seeks to serve students of all ages and experience levels in their research into local, regional and state history and genealogy.
Heritage Room Quick Facts:
- The Heritage Room has over 10,000 cataloged, non-circulating books on genealogy, local history, Georgia history, and US/world history. Unless they are rare or in fragile condition, all books are in open stacks.
- The Heritage Room has roughly 4000 reels of microfilm, including local newspapers dating back to 1808, Clarke County Superior and Inferior court records, city directories for major Georgia cities and towns, the Sanborn fire insurance maps, the Georgia federal census schedules dating back to 1790, and a variety of other microfilm records.
- The Heritage Room is a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, which means patrons can view microfilm records owned by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT at our facility.
- The Heritage Room owns over 1,000 historical and modern-day maps of Georgia and her counties
- The Heritage Room has current and back issues of over 80 periodicals
- The Heritage Room's archival materials date back to the early 19th century. Included in these collections are personal papers, correspondence, administrative records, minute books, manuscripts, broadsides, maps, newspapers and clippings, architectural drawings, bound record books, ledgers and docket books.
